Despite the joint operations carried out by the General Directorate of Medicines (Digemid) and the Multisectoral Technical Group Against Counterfeiting, the marketing of medicines of dubious origin in Peru continues to rise and amounts around US$ 200 million a year, a figure that has placed Peru among the five countries with the highest number of cases of counterfeit medicines in the world, according to a study carried out by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). It should be noted that during the last year alone, 4 tons of counterfeit medicines and 2 tons of expired and unusable medicines were obtained during home collection campaigns, which were then destroyed, in addition to other 800 kilograms collected in pharmaceutical establishments by Digemid specialists.
